Traveling Under The Cloud of COVID-19

As we made our way west, homeward bound, we continued to try and avoid population centers. We detoured off I-10 at Bowie, AZ and headed south toward Ft. Bowie National Historical Site, down a long, slow, gravel, washboardy road (thanks again, Google Maps!). There were quite a few cars there, and our ultimate destination wasContinue reading “Traveling Under The Cloud of COVID-19”

Sands & Springs

We descended the mountains of Lincoln National Forest into the town of Alamogordo, NM to buy food. This was the first time we’d really seen evidence of people scrambling for supplies, and we saw many shelves empty of paper products, bakery & dairy items, and zero eggs. Fortunately for us, we like stuff like organicContinue reading “Sands & Springs”

The Florida Keys

And then we headed down to the Keys. The Florida Keys are a string of tropical islands stretching about 120 miles off the southern tip of the U.S. state of Florida, between the Atlantic Ocean and Gulf of Mexico. They are 90 miles from Cuba, but worlds apart. The southernmost city is Key West andContinue reading “The Florida Keys”

Big Cypress & The Everglades

We ended up spending a fun and relaxing several days in both Big Cypress National Preserve and Everglades National Park. We stayed in a couple different campsites while we were there, Midway and Monument Lake Campgrounds. Big Cypress is adjacent to the Everglades, and both are located in the southern portion of Florida. One ofContinue reading “Big Cypress & The Everglades”

I Saw Miles and Miles of Texas

So as it turns out, our expectations of Texas were different than the actual thing. It’s a vast, huge state. There are so many different faces of Texas, and we’ve seen many of them. Also, we had a preconceived notion of the folks of Texas (based on previous associations in other lives). We were hugelyContinue reading “I Saw Miles and Miles of Texas”

Big Bend National Park, Texas

Wow, what a great place! Vast, expansive, peaceful, impressive. It takes some effort, mainly in the miles to get there, but once you arrive, you really feel like you have the place practically to yourself. It’s rich in geological features, there are many species of living creatures, the morning and evening light is gorgeous. WeContinue reading “Big Bend National Park, Texas”

Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument

I-10 to Gila Bend and we turned right (south) toward Ajo. Getting off the interstate turned into a beautiful drive, and it was hard to believe how green the desert was. There must have been some rain recently, because the desert floor was green with grasses and other flora, and it was a lovely route.Continue reading “Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument”
